Transforming Barnsley Bangalow with Free Renewable Energy

Customer Profile

Customer Name: Frederick Clay

Age Group: 60-75 Years

Residence: Owner of a 4 Bed Detached Bungalow in Barnsley

Energy Efficiency: Benefited from the UK government ECO4 scheme, receiving fully funded renewable energy upgrades

Interests: Focused on sustainable living, energy cost reduction, and environmental responsibility

Possible Requirements: Installation of renewable technologies such as Air Source Heat Pump and Solar Panels, improving home heating efficiency and reducing reliance on fossil fuels.

Overview

Frederick Clay, a homeowner from Barnsley, upgraded his home’s energy systems by installing an Air Source Heat Pump (ASHP) alongside solar panels, both provided completely free through a government-backed scheme.

Motivated by the desire to reduce energy costs and carbon emissions, Frederick learned about this opportunity through a trusted contact, Christopher, who explained the process and benefits in detail.

The upgrade was supported by a government scheme aimed at promoting sustainable home heating, making the transition more accessible and cost-effective for Frederick.

Since installation, he has experienced a noticeable improvement in home comfort, energy efficiency, and a significant reduction in utility bills.

The Challenges

Frederick initially doubted qualifying for free upgrades, having no previous experience with government schemes.

He found the Air Source Heat Pump complex and unfamiliar, describing it as “like magic,” but valued clear explanations.

Preparing the home involved clearing the garage and building a platform for equipment.

Worried about noise and cold weather performance, Frederick was pleased when the system proved quiet and effective in providing warmth throughout his home.

The Solution

We helped Frederick Clay access free renewable energy upgrades through the government-backed Great British Insulation Scheme and Bus Scheme.

Energex Eco Limited carefully assessed Frederick’s eligibility and confirmed he qualified under the ECO4 standards.

As a result, we were able to install a state-of-the-art Air Source Heat Pump and solar panels at no cost to him.

Now, Frederick can enjoy a warmer, more efficient and eco-friendly home without paying anything, benefiting from lower energy bills and reduced environmental impact.

Implementation

Book Free Survey - Retrofit Assessment:

We scheduled and conducted a thorough free survey of Frederick’s home, assessing the current energy systems and overall efficiency. This helped us determine eligibility and scope for renewable upgrades under the GBIS & Bus scheme.

Analysis Phase:

Our team carefully analysed the survey data to identify the best energy-saving solutions tailored to Frederick’s property. We prioritised measures that would maximise efficiency and heating comfort.

Designing Phase:

We designed a bespoke upgrade plan including a new Air Source Heat Pump and solar panels, ensuring compliance with industry standards and Frederick’s specific needs.

Pre-Inspection:

Before installation, we conducted a pre-inspection to check all conditions were suitable and to clarify any potential issues, guaranteeing readiness for retrofitting.

Confirm Design with Customer:

We reviewed the proposed design with Frederick, explaining each feature and addressing all his questions to ensure full understanding and satisfaction.

Planning Phase:

Our team coordinated installation logistics, obtained necessary permissions, and arranged resources to ensure a smooth process.

Finalise Installation Date with Customer:

We worked closely with Frederick to agree on a convenient installation date, providing clear instructions on what to expect.

Installation Commences:

Our skilled installers arrived on time and carried out the retrofit efficiently, maintaining clear communication and respect for Frederick’s home throughout.

Installation Phase

Energex Eco Limited installed a 12kW Samsung Air Source Heat Pump to efficiently heat Frederick’s home, supporting 15 upgraded radiators to ensure optimal heat distribution.

We also installed 14 high-quality JA Solar panels connected to a 3.6kW hybrid Solax inverter to maximise renewable energy generation.

Additionally, a 5.8kW Solax battery was installed to store excess solar energy; however, this battery was not covered by the ECO4 grant and was purchased directly by the customer.

The Results

Since the installation of the Air Source Heat Pump and solar panels, Frederick has experienced a marked improvement in home comfort with consistently warmer rooms and better heat distribution.

The addition of the solar battery, funded by Frederick personally, has further enhanced energy self-sufficiency by storing excess solar power for use during non-sunny periods.

Overall, the upgrades have not only reduced his carbon footprint but also provided long-term financial savings and peace of mind.
